Raphael Onyedika Helps Club Brugge Win Belgian Cup After Beating Anderlecht
Nigerian midfielder Raphael Onyedika played a key role as Club Brugge won the Belgian Cup on Sunday, beating rivals Anderlecht 2-1 in a thrilling final at the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels.
Brugge’s 12th Belgian Cup title was secured thanks to two goals from 21-year-old Romeo Vermant, who scored in each half. He finished off crosses from Hugo Siquet and Christos Tzolis to give Brugge a strong lead.
Anderlecht pulled one back through Luis Vázquez late in the second half, but Brugge held on to lift the trophy in what was the 202nd meeting between the two teams.
Onyedika, 24, started in midfield and played for 74 minutes before being substituted. He received a yellow card early in the match but stayed calm and helped control the pace of the game, frustrating Anderlecht’s efforts to equalise.
The win means Club Brugge have qualified for next season’s UEFA Europa League and will now face the league champions in the Belgian Super Cup.
Brugge are also still in the race for the league title, sitting just one point behind leaders Union Saint-Gilloise with three matches left to play. A domestic double — which they last achieved in the 1995–96 season — is now a real possibility.
Onyedika has been one of Brugge’s most consistent players this season, making 31 league appearances, starting 27 matches, and playing over 2,200 minutes. He scored his only goal of the campaign in a 7–0 win over Sint-Truiden in November.
Signed from Danish club Midtjylland in 2022, Onyedika is attracting interest from top clubs across Europe, including Manchester City, AC Milan, and PSG.
