Real Madrid persist with Cheryshev appeal

Real Madrid are to appeal to the Administrative Tribunal for Sport (TAD) regarding their expulsion from the Copa del Rey for fielding the ineligible Denis Cheryshev.

Madrid saw an initial appeal against being disqualified from the tournament turned down by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) on Thursday, Cheryshev having started and scored in the 3-1 victory over Cadiz in the first leg of their round-of-32 tie despite being banned.

Cheryshev was booked three times in the competition last season while on loan at Villarreal.

Cadiz complained and Madrid’s appeal – stating that they had not been notified of Cheryshev’s suspension and were not to blame – was dismissed.

Later on Thursday, Madrid confirmed they will continue with their appeal, taking the case to TAD – a Spanish sports committee linked with the country’s government rather than its football authorities.

“Real Madrid C. F. has received and analysed the resolution of the Appeals Committee, which once again verifies that the player Denis Cheryshev was not notified of his ban, the only way the aforementioned ban can take effect,” read a club statement.

“The club has therefore submitted an appeal to the Administrative Court for Sport.”

Having started and scored in Cadiz, Cheryshev was withdrawn in the first minute of the second half after club officials became aware that an error had been made.

The third and final yellow card accumulated by Cheryshev was in Villarreal’s semi-final second-leg defeat to Barcelona, meaning the one-match suspension it triggered was not served by the Russian.

The RFEF subsequently expelled Madrid from the tournament after an official complaint from Cadiz and with Madrid’s appeal rejected, hopes of featuring in the Copa look set to rest on TAD’s judgement.
