Real Sociedad Coach Praises Sadiq Umar After Copa del Rey Win

Super Eagles striker Sadiq Umar has earned praise from his Real Sociedad head coach, Sergio Francisco, after helping the club secure a 2-0 victory over Reus in the Copa del Rey.

Before the match at Estadio Camp Nou Municipal, the 28-year-old had started only one game this season, with four other appearances coming from the bench. His last goal was in May during Valencia’s 1-1 draw with Rayo Vallecano.

Coming on as a substitute against Reus, Sadiq made an instant impact. Just four minutes into the second half, he assisted Mikel Goti’s opener. He later scored a penalty in the 93rd minute to seal the win.

Coach Francisco praised the Nigerian forward for staying focused despite being the club’s third-choice striker this season. He said Sadiq always brings something positive when he is introduced into a match, highlighting his strength, work rate and ability to trouble defenders.

The coach added that Sadiq’s presence in attack helps the team win duels, stretch opponents and create chances. He also noted that the striker was the one who won the decisive late penalty.

Sadiq was recently included in Nigeria’s provisional 55-man squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Despite his improved form, he still faces tough competition for a spot in the final 28-man list, with forwards like Victor Osimhen, Tolu Arokodare, Cyriel Dessers and Akor Adams currently ahead of him in the pecking order.

Even so, his latest performance may boost his chances as the tournament approaches.
