Record-breaking Voges guides Australia on day two against New Zealand

Australia veteran Adam Voges hit a fifth career Test century to help the tourists to a 280-run lead after day two of their first Test against New Zealand.

Voges, 36, started the day on seven and finished 176 not out as Australia ended Saturday at 463-6, in response to New Zealand’s first innings total of 183.

Incredibly, Voges’ score saw him eclipse Donald Bradman’s batting average of 99.94, moving to a spectacular 100.33 in 19 innings.

Voges also managed to break Sachin Tendulkar’s record for most Test runs scored between dismissals.

Tendulkar posted 497 consecutive runs from January to April 2004, but Voges broke the 500-mark when he reached 123 at Basin Reserve..

The right-handed batsman posted a 168-run partnership with Usman Khawaja before the latter succumbed lbw to Trent Boult (2-80) for 140 off the first ball of the 85th over.

Mitchell Marsh was the next to enter but faced just two balls before being spectacularly caught and bowled by Boult.

The Black Caps were hoping those two wickets in quick succession would shift the momentum, but Voges and new partner Peter Nevill stayed calm.

The duo put on a 96-run partnership before Nevill was caught behind off a Corey Anderson (1-68) ball.

Peter Siddle backed up his 3-37 with the ball on day one with 29 not out off 61 balls, getting to stumps with the record-breaking Voges.
