Relegated Southampton avoid unwanted record with Manchester City draw

Southampton, already relegated from the Premier League, managed to earn a hard-fought 0–0 draw against Manchester City at St Mary’s on Saturday, moving to 12 points for the season.

This means the Saints have now avoided matching Derby County’s record low of 11 points from the 2007–08 season.

Manchester City missed the chance to go level on points with second-placed Arsenal. Their performance was poor and lacked energy, just one week before their FA Cup final against Crystal Palace.

City remain in third place, but the dropped points could hurt their chances of finishing in the top five and securing a Champions League spot for next season.

Star striker Erling Haaland returned from injury but struggled to make an impact as City played at a slow pace, unable to break down Southampton’s solid defence.

Manuel Akanji headed wide from a corner, and Bernardo Silva saw a shot cleared off the line by Saints captain Jack Stephens.

Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale made a key save late in the game, keeping out a header from Ruben Dias. At the other end, Omar Marmoush almost won it for Southampton with a powerful strike that hit the crossbar.

The home fans cheered loudly at the final whistle, as their team kept only their third clean sheet of the season — a small but welcome moment in a tough campaign.
