Renard Set to Leave Tunisia After World Cup Exit

Tunisia head coach Hervé Renard is reportedly preparing to step down from his role after the Carthage Eagles’ final Group F match against the Netherlands at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to reports from several Tunisian media outlets, the 57-year-old Frenchman is expected to announce his resignation following Tunisia’s last group-stage game on June 25.

If confirmed, it would be another sudden exit for Renard from the Tunisian national team.

The experienced coach was brought in during the tournament after Tunisia made a poor start to their World Cup campaign. The Tunisian Football Federation turned to Renard in the hope that he could revive the team’s fortunes and guide them back into contention.

However, results failed to improve under his leadership. Tunisia suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their opening match before being beaten 4-0 by Japan in their second game.

The back-to-back losses ended Tunisia’s hopes of reaching the knockout stage, making them the first African nation to be eliminated from the tournament.

Renard’s reported decision to leave comes despite his impressive record in African football. He remains one of the continent’s most respected coaches, having won the Africa Cup of Nations with Zambia in 2012 and Ivory Coast in 2015.

Tunisia’s disappointing performances in the United States, Canada and Mexico have left supporters and football officials unhappy, with many questioning whether the decision to appoint Renard in the middle of the tournament came too late to make a difference.

Should he officially resign after the Netherlands match, it would bring an end to a difficult and disappointing World Cup campaign for the Carthage Eagles.
