REVEALED: How African Games participation has left 30 Sports Federations without funds

According to a recent official statement by the Sports Minister, over 30 Sports Federations in Nigeria Face budget shortfall due to All African Games spending.

The Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh, has revealed that over 30 sports federations in Nigeria will not receive their annual budget allocation for 2024.

This decision comes as a result of funds being redirected to cover expenses for the 2023 All African Games held in Ghana.

During a media parley with sports writers at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja, Enoh explained the situation. “The 2024 sports federations’ budget, which is captured under sporting activities in the Ministry’s budget, has been spent on the All African Games,” he stated.

The minister highlighted the implications of this reallocation, noting that the federations will have to operate without funding for the remainder of 2024.

However, he clarified that this shortfall does not affect the budget for Olympic qualifications, which covers the expenses for qualification games for the 2024 Olympics. “There is no sports federation that did not get funds for Olympic Games qualifiers because you have to compete before qualification,” Enoh assured.

At the 2023 All African Games, Team Nigeria achieved an impressive second-place finish in the final medal table, securing a total of 120 medals, including 47 gold, 33 silver, and 40 bronze.
