Rigobert Song Appointed as Central African Republic Head Coach

Former Cameroon captain and coach Rigobert Song has been named the new head coach of the Central African Republic’s national football team.

The country’s sports ministry confirmed the 48-year-old’s appointment on Tuesday but did not reveal the details of his contract.

Song’s Experience

Song brings a wealth of experience to the role. As a central defender, he represented Cameroon in four World Cups and had a successful club career with teams like Liverpool, West Ham United, Racing Lens, and Galatasaray.

As a coach, he led Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. However, his tenure included a notable incident involving goalkeeper Andre Onana, who left the tournament after a dispute with Song.

Taking Over from Raoul Savoy

Song replaces Swiss coach Raoul Savoy, who was dismissed in October following the team’s failure to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Despite their AFCON disappointment, the Central African Republic still has a chance to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. They currently sit fifth in Group I with four points from four matches, trailing group leaders Comoros and Ghana by five points.

The team will resume their World Cup qualifying campaign in March with home games against Madagascar and Mali.

Song’s appointment is seen as a fresh start for the Central African Republic, with hopes that his experience can inspire a turnaround in their fortunes.
