Rinsola Babajide Turns Attention to Olympic Qualifiers After WAFCON Setback
Super Falcons forward Rinsola Babajide says Nigeria must move on from their disappointing 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign and focus on the Olympic qualifiers.
Nigeria suffered a setback in their bid to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup after failing to secure a place through the WAFCON route.
Babajide, who was part of the Super Falcons squad, admitted that missing out on the World Cup was painful.
“Heartbroken, to say the least. It really hurts to miss out on a World Cup spot, but I’m grateful for the opportunity to represent my country at another WAFCON,” she said.
The forward said the team did not get the result they wanted but believes the players can recover from the disappointment.
“We might be down right now, but we’ll definitely bounce back, the only way we know how to, the Naija way,” Babajide added.
She said the team must now take time to look at what went wrong and prepare for the next challenge.
“Time to reset, reflect and work ahead towards the Olympic qualifiers,” she said.
Babajide also thanked Nigerian fans for their support throughout the tournament.
“Thank you to everyone who supported us both in the stands and from home through it all. The journey has been real,” she added.
The Super Falcons will now shift their attention to the Olympic qualifiers as they look to secure a place in the next women’s football tournament at the Olympic Games.
