Rivers United 2 KCCA 1: Eguma’s Men Win to Keep CAFCC Next Round Hopes Alive

By: Timothy Dehinbo

At the Yakubu Gowon stadium this on Tuesday, it was an affair between Rivers United of Port Harcourt and Kampala Capital City Authority in the 2nd Leg tie of the CAF Confederations cup group stage.

The game ended 2-1 in favor of the Home side, repeating the First leg result which ended 2-1 in favor of KCCA in Uganda.

It was an exciting affair as Bernard Ovoke opened scoring just 54 seconds after Kick Off from a Corner Kick. They pressured the Ugandan team defense in the early stages and kept KCAA FC’s defense in tenterhook.

15 minutes into the game Rivers united got a second goal via Frederick Obomata courtesy an Ovoke assist. It was all Rivers United in the First half, as they almost got a third via Ovoke, but his header from Doumbia’s cross went wide as they kept on pushing with the hunger in them.

KCCA first clear chance came in the 33rd minute as First leg nemesis Derrick Nsibambi almost pulled one back for the visitors. But they finally got a belief goal at the stroke of Half Time via Geoffrey Serunkuuma after Rivers Defense went to sleep as it ended 2-1 at Half Time.

Not too many scenes in the 2nd half, but the hosts almost scored a third in the 77th minute but KCCA GK Ochan comes off his line to beat
the ball away from goal sight.

The Final 5 minutes pulled lots of drama with Ochan saves Igbinoba’s shot for Rivers, and Ochan nearly equalizing from the counter move.

Mike Hillary Mutebi’s side were reduced to 10 men in the 89th minute, Kavuma getting a second booking for a foul on Sakin, though it had less impact on the game as it was almost Full Time.
And at Full Time Rivers United fans had smiles on their faces with the win as it ended 2-1 in their favour.

The win puts them at 3rd place on the table with 6 points, just GD separating them with KCCA FC at 2nd. Two more games to go in the group stage, and Rivers united to do much better to progress to the next round.
