Rivers United skipper Nyima Nwagua reacts to match-winner vs Club Africain

As a leader should do, it was Rivers United FC skipper Nyima Nwagua who led by example with the match winner vs Club Africain in the CAF Confederation Cup.

On Sunday December 10, 2023, Nigerian club Rivers United FC welcomed Tunisia’s Club Africain to the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium Uyo, for the 2023/2024 CAF Confederation Cup group stage matchday three fixture.

Prior to kickoff, there was palpable tension in the camp of the hosts with memories of Club Africains 0-2 win vs Rivers United in Port Harcourt back in 2017 and a 3-1 result in Tunis which gave the visitors the head to head advantage.

Nwagua struck the game’s only goal to hand the Pride of Rivers maximum points and a boost in their push for quater-final ticket from group C.

After the game, Nwagua said the 1-0 win over has made the confidence in camp high and dedicated his goal to the team and Nigerians.

“It makes the confidence in the camp high. I thank God I was privileged to score and this is for the team and Nigerians.” Nwagua said.

Rivers United FC will travel to Tunisia to face Club Africain on matchday four.

North African sides are difficult oppositions when playing in front of their fans but the Rivers United FC skipper is unpeturbed, “it’s football, anything can happen in football.” Nwagua said of thier chances of getting a positive result at the Stade Olympique Hammadi Agrebi on Wednesday, December 20, 2023.

As it stands, Rivers United FC, Club Africain and Dreams FC are tied on six points in group C after three of six expected group stage matches.

Academica do Lobito of Angola are the bottom team in group C having lost 3-0 to Rivers United FC in Uyo before bac to back home losses vs Club Africain of Tunisia and Ghana’s Dreams FC in yesterday’s game.
