Robertson believes Westbrook would have been great in any era, backs him to break more records

After breaking a 55-year-old NBA record, Oscar Robertson believes Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook can go on and make more history.

It was a landmark day in the NBA as Westbrook set the record for the most triple-doubles in a regular season with his 42nd against the Denver Nuggets on Sunday.

Westbrook posted 50 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists – including the match-winning buzzer-beater – in the thrilling 106-105 win as he surpassed Hall of Famer Robertson.

The six-time All-Star, who is averaging a triple-double for the season, also has 79 career triple-doubles as he continues to make waves, despite losing star team-mate Kevin Durant to the Golden State Warriors.

And Robertson expressed his admiration for Westbrook post-match, the 78-year-old and 1971 champion lauding his impact on the NBA.

“I could not be happier for him. Congratulations to Russell Westbrook on a magnificent season,” Robertson wrote for the Undefeated.

“Westbrook’s averages are similar to mine in both scoring and assists [a point higher in scoring, a digit lower in assists]. What’s more, he leads the league in scoring by a comfortable margin at 31.9 points per game.”

“If he stays healthy, there’s no reason he couldn’t eventually break my career record of 181 triple-double games. Magic Johnson is second at 138 and Jason Kidd third at 107.”

Robertson added: “Westbrook’s journey to tie or break my single-season triple-double records has been remarkable, and I’m happy to congratulate him for doing so.

“The journey has been great for Westbrook, the NBA, the fans and the media. It has created even more interest in the game and gives everyone something to talk about.

“I admire Westbrook’s all-around command of the game. He is a marvellous athlete who plays with intensity and flair and is exciting to watch. His performance this season is impressive. He would have been great in any era.”
