Rohr: Draw againts South Africa just like a win
Super Eagles manager, Gernot Rohr has likened the team’s 1-1 draw at the FNB Stadium against South Africa in their AFCON qualifier to a win.
The German who lamented the absence of some of his key players due to suspension and injuries was more than satisfied to finally qualify Nigeria for an AFCON berth than how his side played.
Despite setting his team out with three defenders in his 3-5-2 formation Rohr rejeted claims his side were set out to play for a point and not the win.
“We tried to score the second goal, off course we play to win all the time,” said Rohr at the post match interview.
“It is the first time, it is the first match since five matches now that we didn’t win, we won the four other matches before that is why we wanted to win.
“But we didn’t want to take any risk because we knew that a draw is just like a win to us.”
Although the Super Eagles were below par on Saturday, the draw was good enough to secure the three-time African champions a place in the 2019 AFCON billed for Cameroon.
