Cristiano Ronaldo delivered an impressive performance to help Manchester United thrash Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and return them to winning ways in the league after a poor run of form.
Following their 5-0 defeat at the hands of Liverpool, the Red Devils needed to pick up a good result and ease the pressure mounting on manager Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer. They came up against a Tottenham side that are also far from their best as they lost to West Ham in their last league match.
With the scores level, Tottenham went close through Korean forward Heung-Min Son as he poked an effort high after expertly controlling the ball as it dropped out of the sky.
With halftime imminent, Manchester United opened the scoring through the phenomenal Cristiano Ronaldo in the 39th minute. The Portuguese forward brilliantly volleyed home a lofted pass from compatriot Bruno Fernandes from a tight angle to give the Red Devils a deserved lead.
Cristiano Ronaldo turned provider in the second half for Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani, as he played a through ball into the path of the veteran to finish delicately and double Manchester United’s advantage in the 64th minute of the match.
Two Manchester United substitutes combined to give them a three-goal lead in the 86th minute and put the game to bed for good. Marcus Rashford managed to hold his run and stay onside as Nemanja Matic played a through pass through the ragged Tottenham Hotspur defence for the 23-year-old to neatly slide a finish into the far corner.
It was a complete performance from the Red Devils that saw them pick up a hugely important three points against one of their direct rivals.
Ronaldo helped Manchester United thrash Tottenham and also became the Premier League’s oldest player ever to score and assist in the same match, matching the record set by Didier Drogba for Chelsea in 2014.
