Ronaldo–Jorge Jesus Tension Grows As Portugal Future Comes Under Fresh Doubt

Cristiano Ronaldo’s future with the Portugal national team has come under fresh scrutiny following reports of renewed tension between the Al Nassr forward and head coach Jorge Jesus.

Ronaldo had previously admitted that he considered retiring from international football after the World Cup but said Portugal Football Federation president Pedro Proença and Jesus told him that they still counted on him.

The 41-year-old started Jesus’ first competitive match in charge against Wales and played about 70 minutes as Portugal secured a 1-0 victory.

However, Jesus left Ronaldo on the bench for the following match against Norway, explaining that the veteran forward had played almost 70 minutes only three days earlier.

Jesus said before the game that he wanted Ronaldo to feature, and reports indicated that the captain was expected to enter the match later.

Jesus subsequently revealed that he and Ronaldo had agreed that the forward would play around the final 30 minutes. Ronaldo reportedly warmed up with the expectation of coming on, but he eventually remained on the bench for the entire game.

The coach explained that the decision was tactical, with Gonçalo Ramos performing well, scoring and having another goal ruled out.

Jesus also stressed that Ronaldo was physically fit enough to play.

“He was in condition to play for as long as I wanted,” Jesus said, explaining that the match situation influenced his decision.

After the final whistle, Ronaldo reportedly went straight down the tunnel rather than joining his teammates in greeting the Portugal supporters.

Jesus later said he had not noticed the reaction during the match and added that he needed to speak with Ronaldo.

The situation intensified when Ronaldo subsequently trained separately from the main Portugal squad. The Portuguese FA explained that he had returned to the team hotel to complete an individual gym programme because the stadium lacked equipment required for his session.

Jesus also denied that Ronaldo had refused to train.

Amid the growing reports, FPF president Pedro Proença travelled to Scandinavia, where he reportedly met Ronaldo and Jesus for a face-to-face discussion.

Reports initially suggested that the meeting helped settle the situation, while Jesus later played down the controversy, saying the supposed problem “wasn’t even a problem.”

The Portugal coach also maintained that while Ronaldo deserves respect because of his status, sporting decisions remain the responsibility of the coach.

“In the team, I’m the one who decides,” Jesus said.

However, fresh reports from Portugal and Spain, including MARCA, claim that tensions have resurfaced. Ronaldo has again reportedly been absent from normal group training, while questions continue over his relationship with Jesus.

The situation has also raised fresh speculation about Ronaldo’s international future.

Ronaldo had said only days earlier that if Portugal, Jesus or the FPF no longer truly counted on him, he would “take my bag and leave.”

With reports now claiming that Ronaldo has left the Portugal camp, his future with the national team has become a major talking point.

MARCA has also raised the possibility of Ronaldo retiring from international football, although the reports do not establish that he has made a final decision.

For now, the dispute remains centred on Ronaldo’s expectations over his role, Jesus’ tactical decisions and how the situation has been communicated between the Portugal captain, the coach and the federation.
