Rory McIlroy rues Doral collapse

Rory McIlroy was left to deal with the frustration of letting another lead slip after he missed out on the WGC-Cadillac Championship on Sunday.

McIlroy led by three shots going into the final day at Trump National Doral in Miami and was six strokes ahead of eventual winner Adam Scott after five holes of the last round.

But six birdies in nine holes saw Scott turn things in his favour, with bogeys on seven, nine and 13 hindering McIlroy’s cause as he eventually finished tied third.

His slump marked the second time in three tournaments McIlroy has squandered an advantage, having done the same at the Northern Trust Open at Riviera Country Club, where he finished tied 20th, last month.

McIlroy said: “I didn’t make enough birdies. I felt like my game was OK for the most part, but I didn’t take advantage of the holes I should have.

“I couldn’t birdie any of the par fives and that’s really what killed me.It’s frustrating because it’s two out of the last three weeks.

“I was leading the golf tournament with 16 holes to play in Riviera, I was leading the golf tournament here going into the back nine, and to not get the job done in either two of those instances is very frustrating.

“I’ve got two events left to try to get that win before going to Augusta [for the Masters] and I’m hopefully going to get it.”
