Sadiq Umar revival plotted at Real Sociedad
Real Sociedad is making a renewed effort to restore Nigerian striker Umar Sadiq’s reputation and confidence as their key player.
After a summer of uncertainty and transfer rumors, where Sadiq struggled to attract significant interest from other clubs, the club’s president, Jokin Aperribay, has decided to focus on reintegrating the forward into the squad rather than pursuing a transfer. This decision comes as the transfer window nears its end, with Aperribay aiming to maximize Sadiq’s potential by working closely with him.
Sadiq’s time at Real Sociedad has been challenging, especially following a severe injury that sidelined him for most of the 2022-2023 season.
Although he made a promising start with a debut goal against Atlético Madrid after joining from Almeria in 2022, his progress was halted by the injury during a La Liga match against Getafe.
In the 2023-2024 season, Sadiq made a gradual return, scoring his first goal of the season in a victory over Sevilla and adding another spectacular strike against Osasuna. However, he ended the season with just three goals and one assist in 26 league appearances, leading to criticism from fans, especially after a controversial image he shared on social media.
Despite the setbacks, Real Sociedad is giving the 27-year-old another chance to prove himself as their crucial No. 9, a role the club desperately needs filled. The club hopes that by restoring Sadiq’s form, they can improve on their sixth-place finish in La Liga last season.
