Samuel Boboye leads Nigeria U-19 to gold with Egypt rout in ITTF tourney

Egypt defeats Nigeria U-15 in final

Nigerian teenage table tennis sensation Samuel Boboye teamed up with two other youngsters to defeat Egypt’s U-19 boys team in the final of the 2022 ITTF African Youth Championship in Tunis, Tunisia.

Having watched Egypt’s U-15 team composed of Abdelaal Anas, ElSayed Abdelmalik, Gaber Yassin and Elserafy Yassin defeat Nigeria’s U-15 boys team composed of Kuti Matthew, Mustapha Mustapha and Musa Mustapha 3-1 to win their third gold in four events, the Nigerian U-19 team took it upon themselves to deny the Egyptians a clean sweep.

Samuel Boboye, Mati Taiwo and Muiz Adegoke showed their class to defeat Egypt’s Marwan Gamal, Mohamed Azzam and Moamen Salah El Din 3-1 in their final to claim gold in the U-19 boys category.

The Nigerian contingent to Tunis ended up with one gold medal and one silver medal from two events, while their rivals Egypt had three gold medals and a silver medal in four events. The Nigerians did not have female teams for both the U-15 and U-19 categories as the Table Tennis Federation cited lack of funds and a team as their reason.
