Sanwo-Olu happy to receive English Premier League trophy in Lagos State
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, welcomed the Premier League trophy to the State House in Marina on Sunday and repeated his government’s promise to use sports to engage young people and promote social growth.
The trophy was presented by Mr. Girish Sharma, the Managing Director and CEO of Guinness Nigeria Plc. This visit was part of Guinness Nigeria’s plan to bring the Premier League closer to Nigerian football fans.
The event was announced in a press statement signed by the governor’s media adviser, Gboyega Akosile.
During the event, Governor Sanwo-Olu called the Premier League a great source of inspiration for young people. He said, “We are happy Guinness brought the Premier League Trophy to Lagos. This trophy inspires millions. We believe sports can bring positive change, help connect with our youth, and show their talents.”
He added that sports could help build responsible citizens and serve as a powerful tool for youth development and social connection.
Sanwo-Olu also praised Guinness Nigeria for investing in sports and community activities. He encouraged the company to help bring Premier League clubs to Lagos during their summer breaks. “Let the teams visit, even if just for a few days. We’re friendly, and we only want to meet them, take photos, and show our support. Lagos has millions of fans who would love the experience,” he said.
He promised that Lagos would remain a welcoming place for businesses and organisations, saying, “We will keep making Lagos a good place for companies to grow, so we can improve the economy and give people a better life.”
Mr. Sharma, in his speech, thanked the Lagos government for supporting business and said Nigeria’s love for football is why the trophy tour came to Lagos.
“I’m happy to present the Premier League Trophy to fans in Nigeria. Football is a huge part of life here, and it’s important they get a chance to see the trophy up close,” he said.
Sharma also noted that Guinness Nigeria, now marking its 75th year, is still committed to supporting the country and asked Nigerians to keep believing in the nation’s future.
