Senegal Women’s Basketball team’s new coach targets Olympic games qualification at the expense of Nigeria
Albert Antuna, the recently appointed coach of the Senegal Women’s Basketball team, is determined to secure the Olympic Games ticket at the expense of Nigeria’s D’Tigress.
Antuna took over the coaching responsibilities after the departure of Mustapha Gaye, following Senegal’s loss to D’Tigress in the final of the Women’s Afrobasketball Championship.
In a statement ahead of the upcoming qualifiers, the former Uganda coach outlined his primary goal: “The first objective is qualification for the Olympic Games.
” We know that we will have work in this group. I won’t be here if we can’t beat Nigeria, that’s why I’m here. I know we will have to work hard and there is not much time left. We will have to be realistic.”
Antuna acknowledged the challenging task ahead and emphasized the importance of realistic expectations, considering the limited time available for preparation. He expressed confidence in the team’s ability to compete, despite potential constraints, and highlighted the need for a focused and determined approach.
“I know that the team will mainly be made up of players who have played in AfroBasket, but we will start preparation with those who will be available, especially at the local level,” Antuna added.
The Olympic Games qualification process for the Senegal Women’s Basketball team is set to commence in February, with Senegal facing formidable opponents such as Belgium, the United States, and Nigeria.
Antuna’s commitment to securing victory against Nigeria underscores the competitive spirit within the team and the importance attached to Olympic qualification.
As Senegal gears up for the qualifiers, the focus is on meticulous preparation, strategic player selection, and a resilient mindset to overcome challenges on the path to Olympic qualification.
