Sidney Sam regrets snubbing Nigeria for Germany

Sidney Sam has revealed his biggest career regret was saying no to Nigeria because of a chance to play for the German national team.

Sam who played for Germany under-age teams from 2007-2010 was eligible to represent Nigeria because of his Nigerian father but he turned down the chance.

After a great season at Bayer Leverkusen, Sidney Sam was approached by the Nigeria Football Federation to commit his international allegiance to the country.

But he said no and instead played for Die Mannschaft with the hopes of making it to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil where they eventually won the trophy.

Although he was included in the provisional squad he never made the final 23-man squad and missed out on playing at the FIFA World cup for both Nigeria and Germany.

“Looking back I can say I was close to winning the World Cup with Germany.

“Maybe I would have played in it if I had accepted the chance offered by Nigeria.

“My regret yes it is but in life when you make a decision you live with the consequences “, he said.

The 32-year-old Sidney Sam now plays in the Austria league with SCR Altach.
