Sixers crush Hurricanes in BBL
Brad Haddin and Nathan Lyon starred as the Sydney Sixers thrashed the Hobart Hurricanes by 95 runs in the Big Bash League on Sunday.
Former Australia wicketkeeper Haddin (72) set up the Sixers’ total of 186-7 after they elected to bat first at the SCG, coming into the clash after a loss against Sydney Thunder in their BBL opener.
The Hurricanes never looked likely to reach their target after being reduced to 4-3 inside three overs.
Lyon (5-23) did the early damage, including removing ex-Sri Lanka wicketkeeper-batsman Kumar Sangakkara for a golden duck before George Bailey (62 not out) ran out of partners.
Michael Lumb’s early dismissal did nothing to discourage Haddin, who combined with Nic Maddinson (21) for a 66-run partnership.
Darren Sammy’s two overs went for 32, including Haddin hitting him for back-to-back sixes in the 12th over.
Haddin’s excellent innings was over when he picked out Dan Christian on the boundary off Cameron Boyce (2-25) and that led to a drop in the run rate.
Jordan Silk hit two sixes in his 25-ball 41, but Haddin’s innings set up their imposing total.
The Hurricanes made a dreadful start to their chase.
Tim Paine (0) chipped Lyon to Moises Henriques and Sangakkara was out first ball, coming down the pitch and lofting the off-spinner to Doug Bollinger at mid-on.
Bollinger bowled Ben Dunk (1) as the Hurricanes were reduced to 4-3.
Christian (4) was then run out as things went from bad to worse for the Hurricanes and Jonathan Wells (1) chipped Steve O’Keefe to Henriques to leave the visitors on 21-5.
Sammy (2) picked out Maddinson on the boundary and only Bailey provided any resistance as Hobart suffered a heavy defeat.
