Spain Defeat Nigeria 2-0 in U20 Women’s World Cup Opener
Nigeria’s U20 women’s national team, the Falconets, started their 2026 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup campaign with a 2-0 defeat to former champions Spain on Monday evening.
The match was played at the Arena Sosnowiec in Poland, with Spain showing their quality to secure all three points in Group F.
The 2022 champions took the lead in the 13th minute when Marisa Garcia calmly finished past Nigeria goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma.
The Falconets responded well after conceding and created a few chances as they searched for an equaliser. However, they were unable to find the back of the net before half-time.
Coach Moses Aduku’s side returned for the second half with more energy and enjoyed good periods of possession. Nigeria pushed forward in search of an equaliser but found Spain’s goalkeeper Lopez in fine form.
The Spanish goalkeeper made important saves to keep her side ahead as the Falconets continued to attack.
Spain then doubled their lead in the 72nd minute through Alba Cerrato. The forward took advantage of a counter-attack and beat Uzoma to make it 2-0.
Nigeria continued to fight until the final whistle but could not break through Spain’s well-organised defence.
The defeat leaves the Falconets with work to do in Group F. They will now turn their attention to their second group match against China PR on Thursday, September 10, hoping to return to winning ways.
