Spanish Grand Prix: Verstappen dominance continues as Mercedes finally come to the party

Max Verstappen continued his dominance in the Formula One this season as he eased to victory in the Spanish Grand Prix, notching up his 40th career win and fifth of the season.

After his stunning display at the Monaco Grand Prix last week, Red Bull driver Verstappen continued his brilliance by taking pole position in qualifying during the event in Barcelona.

Verstappen led the race from start to finish and also recorded the fastest lap as he cruised to victory in the Spanish Grand Prix. The Dutchman finished the race 24 seconds ahead of second-place Lewis Hamilton, who secured his 193rd career podium. Hamilton was joined on the podium by fellow Mercedes driver George Russell, who finished third.

Sergio Perez finished in fourth place while Carlos Sainz finished fifth to pick up points on home soil. Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso, both of Aston Martin, finished sixth and seventh, respectively. After his heroics in Monaco, Esteban Ocon had to settle for eighth place, with Yuki Tsunoda finishing ninth and Zhou Guanyu finishing in tenth place.

Hamilton was voted as the Driver of the Day after a stunning display in Barcelona helped him secure a second P2 finish this year. Verstappen earned an extra point for having the fastest lap of the race.

Max Verstappen now holds a 53-point lead atop the Driver’s standings for the season, with Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez in second place. The Formula One season will continue in Canada with the Canadian Grand Prix two weeks from now.
