Spitting Controversy Mars Champions League Clash Between Barcelona and Inter Milan

Barcelona defender Iñigo Martínez is facing criticism after appearing to spit towards Inter Milan’s Francesco Acerbi during a fiery Champions League semi-final clash.

The incident occurred shortly after Hakan Calhanoglu gave Inter a 2-0 lead in the second leg, making it 5-3 on aggregate. As Acerbi jogged back towards his own half, TV footage appeared to show Martínez spitting in the Italian defender’s direction.

Acerbi reacted angrily and had to be restrained by Barcelona midfielder Pedri and several teammates, as he pointed and shouted in protest. Referee Szymon Marciniak tried to calm the situation, but the flashpoint sparked debate online.

Despite replays circulating on social media, VAR did not pick up the incident. If it had been spotted, Martínez could have been shown a straight red card for spitting — a serious offence under UEFA rules.

The Barcelona defender was later booked in the 51st minute for a rough foul on Marcus Thuram and was eventually substituted in the 76th minute by manager Hansi Flick, possibly to avoid further trouble.

Tensions aside, Barcelona mounted a stunning comeback. Goals from Eric Garcia and Dani Olmo levelled the match before Raphinha gave the Spanish side a 3-2 lead in the 87th minute. However, Acerbi had the final say in regular time, scoring a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser to make it 3-3 on the night and 6-6 on aggregate.

In extra time, Davide Frattesi scored in the 99th minute to secure a 4-3 win for Inter and send the Italian side through to the final in Munich on 31 May, where they will face either Paris Saint-Germain or Arsenal.

UEFA may yet review the spitting incident, which could lead to disciplinary action against Martínez.
