Stephen Curry urges Warriors not to miss chance at history

Stephen Curry has urged Golden State Warriors not to squander their chance at making NBA history against Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday.

The irrepressible Curry was at his majestic best as the reigning MVP contributed 37 points in the Warriors’ 92-86 win at San Antonio Spurs on Sunday as they tied Chicago Bulls’ record of 72 regular-season victories set in 1996-97.

Warriors had not won a regular-season match in San Antonio since February 1997, a run of 33 fixtures, and victory over the Grizzlies in their final match on home court before the Playoffs will see them etch their name into the record books.

Curry insists that winning a second consecutive NBA championship remains the ultimate goal, but the point guard is desperate to make history.

“Obviously we’re in the moment and enjoying the ride and obviously the goal is to win the championship,” he said. “That’s what we’re playing for.

“But we’ve put ourselves in a great position to end the season with a win and do something no team’s done in history, so that’s an amazing accomplishment.

“It’s hard to actually step outside the locker room and understand the spotlight that comes with it. We come out every night trying to win, but when you understand and just think about I guess, perspective.

“Only two teams have done what we’ve done so far. Hopefully on Wednesday we can finish that off.”

Head coach Steve Kerr was a member of the all-conquering Bulls side of two decades ago and he struggled to comprehend being involved with both incredible seasons.

“I don’t even know what to say, really. It’s crazy. It just feels like a right place right time type of thing to be part of two teams that have performed like this and won at this level for the entire season,” he added.

“I’m pretty lucky, really, just to play next to Michael [Jordan] and Scottie [Pippen] and Dennis [Rodman] and played for Phil [Jackson]. And then I come here and inherit this whole group.

“You know, Steph and Klay [Thompson] and Draymond [Green] and Andre [Iguodala] and everybody else in my first coaching job. It’s a pretty good draw, I got a good draw.”

However, Kerr warned the record will count for little if the Warriors fail to win the championship.

“Like I said it’s very gratifying and it’s fun. Our guys are excited,” he said. “But it means nothing if we [don’t] see this team down the road.”
