Stoinis replaces injured Faulkner in Australia squad

James Faulkner will miss the remainder of Australia’s one-day international series against New Zealand due to a hamstring injury.

The all-rounder is to fly home on Thursday after sustaining the problem during Wednesday’s crushing 159-run defeat at Eden Park and Marcus Stoinis has been called up as a replacement.

Cricket Australia sports science and sport medicine manager Alex Kountouris said: “James reported increased stiffness in his right hamstring during the first innings and found it difficult running during our batting innings.

“Unfortunately, with the short turnaround between games we do not believe he will recover in time to take any further part in the series.

“As a result, he will return to Melbourne tomorrow to have scans and start rehabilitation.

“We are hopeful this is only a low-grade injury but will know more in the coming days.”

Faulkner made 36 despite being troubled by the injury, putting on 79 for the seventh wicket with Matthew Wade after Australia were reduced to 41-6 in reply to 307-8 and were eventually dismissed for only 148.

The 26-year-old also recorded figures of 2-67, but will play no further part in the series and Stoinis will be hoping to add to the solitary ODI appearance he made against England last year.

Australia will attempt to level the three-match series when they face the Black Caps in Wellington on Saturday.
