SUNDAY OLISEH LEADS DUTCH CLUB SITTARD TO FIRST TITLE IN 23 YEARS
Fortuna Sittard, managed by Nigeria legend Sunday Oliseh, have been crownd Eerste Divisie (Period 2) champions after they beat Jong Ajax 2-1 on Friday night.
There are four Periods in a season and each is made up of nine matches. The winner of each of the four periods qualifies for a promotion playoff at the of the season.
The title is Fortuna’s first in 23 years and Sunday Oliseh has hailed the fans for their support.
Oliseh: “We wanted to win this for the fans because they have not won anything in over 20 years, from a club that was dying in January to a club that is winning a Period title.”
Also on social media, @SundayOOliseh tweeted: “Our victory over Jong Ajax 2-1 today @FortunaSittard not only makes it a record seven victories in a row,but secures us the 2nd Period title. Fortuna’s 1st title in 23 years. God is Great!”
Fortuna Sittard now have 44 points from 20 Eerste divisie games after their seventh league win on the bounce.
