Super Eagles deserve 2023 AFCON trophy – Ahmed Musa

Sivasspor and Super Eagles forward, Ahmed Musa, expressed his conviction that the Nigeria national team deserves to clinch the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy.

Aged 31, Musa stands as one of the only two players in the current squad who have previously won the AFCON with the Super Eagles, with Kenneth Omeruo being the other player.

Their triumph came in the 2013 edition of the tournament, which was hosted in South Africa.

Despite not featuring on the field in Ivory Coast, Musa’s significance within the squad has been emphasized by both the coach and fellow teammate, former Arsenal player Alex Iwobi.

Speaking ahead of the 2023 AFCON final on Sunday, February 11, 2024, Musa conveyed in his pre-match conference that securing a fourth title against the hosts will be the key objective for the Super Eagles.

“In my opinion, this has been one of my best AFCON tournaments. It has been filled with surprises from the outset until now.

” The most crucial objective is to win tomorrow’s game. It holds immense importance for us Nigerians. We have deserved it right from the start, so we are determined to give our utmost effort,” the Super Eagles of Nigeria captain said.

When asked about any observed changes in Ivory Coast’s team dynamics since the change in management, Musa responded, “I don’t think there’s anything new about them, it’s just a few tactical and personnel changes. For us, we just have to look back at the game we played against them, see what they changed and see what we can do with that.”

Should Nigeria emerge victorious in the AFCON 2023 final, Musa and Omeruo will etch their names in Super Eagles history as the first-ever players to secure the AFCON title twice.
