Super Eagles interim manager holds first meeting with Technical staff

Former AFC Ajax winger George Finidi has commenced his duties as the interim coach of the Nigerian national football team, the Super Eagles.

Finidi, who also holds the position of chief coach at NPFL champions Enyimba, recently convened his first meeting with the team’s technical staff.

Having previously served as an assistant to Jose Peseiro during the latter’s 22-month tenure as head coach of the Super Eagles, Finidi played a crucial role in guiding the team to a commendable second-place finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations held in Cote d’Ivoire.

Following Peseiro’s departure from the role at the conclusion of the AFCON tournament, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) announced the vacancy and invited interested candidates to apply for the position. Although a permanent appointment is yet to be finalized, the NFF is anticipated to appoint a new substantive head coach for the Super Eagles ahead of the next round of World Cup qualifiers scheduled for June.

In the interim period, the Super Eagles are set to participate in two friendly matches against Ghana and Mali on March 22nd and 26th, respectively. The NFF has entrusted Finidi with the responsibility of leading the team for these encounters against Ghana’s Black Stars and Mali’s Eagles.

Finidi has already arrived in Marrakech, where the Super Eagles have established their training camp in preparation for the upcoming friendly matches. He wasted no time in convening his first meeting with the coaching staff, signaling the commencement of his leadership role.

Furthermore, Finidi welcomed ten Super Eagles players to the training camp on Tuesday morning.

The group includes notable names such as Cyriel Dessers, Nathan Tella, Jamilu Collins, Semi Ajayi, Alex Iwobi, Moses Simon, Calvin Bassey, Bruno Onyemaechi, Fisayo Bashiru, and Stanley Nwabali.

Additionally, Real Sociedad striker Umar Sadiq has also joined the squad, further bolstering the team’s lineup ahead of the friendly encounters.
