Super Eagles now 40th best in the World
Despite the 6-0 spanking of Sao Tome and Principe, Nigeria’s Super Eagles have been ranked 40th best in the World on the FIFA rankings.
The latest ranking was released on Thursday, 21 September via FIFA’s website.
As seen on the released FIFA rankings, the hammering of Sao Tome and Principe was like the result itself a dead-rubber and was no effect as the Super Eagles dropped two spots.
In Africa, the Super Eagles occupy sixth place behind Morocco (1st), Senegal (2nd), Tunisia (3rd), Algeria (4th) and Egypt (5th).
In comparison with Nigeria’s next international engagements, Saudi Arabia who the Eagles will face in an International Friendly in October, drop to 57th in the World.
From the World Cup qualification group, Nigeria’s first opponent , Lesotho, dropped to 152nd place with South Africa and Benin Republic also dropping to 65 and 94 places respectively while Zimbabwe stayed at125 and Rwanda also retained 139th place.
In the top ten teams, Argentina consolidated their grip on top spot with victories over Ecuador and Bolivia in their opening FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers, in September.
Second place France lost some ground on Argentina after suffering a 2-1 friendly defeat against Germany.
Brazil (3rd), England (4th) and Belgium (5th) retain their places in an unchanged top five.
Croatia (6th), Netherlands (7th) and Portugal (8th), Italy (9th) and Spain complete the top ten teams in the World.
