Super Eagles receive boost as Stanley Nwabali trains ahead of Angola AFCON Clash

Nigeria Super Eagles have received a significant boost ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarterfinal clash against Angola, as goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has returned to training.

The 27-year-old shot-stopper, who has been a standout performer for the Super Eagles in the tournament, had raised concerns after picking up an injury in the round of 16 encounter against Cameroon.

Nwabali’s impressive displays in AFCON 2023 have contributed to Nigeria’s solid defensive record, with three clean sheets in four matches. His calmness, confidence, and composure have added a breath of fresh air to the Super Eagles’ defense.

After being examined by Nigerian doctors and undergoing a scan in Ivory Coast, it was determined that Nwabali’s injury was not as serious as initially feared. A video posted by Naija Football shows the goalkeeper back in training, actively working towards regaining full fitness for the upcoming quarterfinal clash against Angola.

The return of Nwabali is welcomed by both manager Jose Peseiro and Nigerian fans, who have been anxiously awaiting updates on the goalkeeper’s fitness. Having conceded just one goal in four matches, Nwabali’s availability provides a timely boost as the Super Eagles aim to secure a spot in the semifinals of AFCON 2023.

Nigeria is set to face Angola in the quarterfinals on Friday, Febuary 2, 2024 with a late fitness test on Thursday, to determine if Nwabali will be ready for the game.

The Chippa United man went through a fitness test on Tuesday, January 30, successfully but will wait for clearance from the medical team to participate in full training today.

In the meantime, former first-choice gaolie, Francis Uzoho is tipped to step in if the Chippa United goalkeeper is not passed fit and ready to face Angola.
