Super Eagles return to Nigeria after maltreatment in Libya

The Nigeria Super Eagles have returned safely to Nigeria following a distressing experience in Libya, where they were mistreated upon arrival for their scheduled 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Group D qualifier.

Reports confirm that the team landed in Kano after a three-and-a-half-hour flight from Libya. Kano served as a refueling stop for their chartered aircraft, which will continue to Abuja and finally Lagos.

The Super Eagles, led by captain William Troost-Ekong, decided not to proceed with the AFCON qualifier against Libya after facing severe maltreatment. Upon their arrival, the team was allegedly stranded for hours at an abandoned airport without access to food, water, or the ability to contact their families.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) lodged a formal protest to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) over the incident. CAF has responded by agreeing to investigate the situation and take appropriate actions.

Troost-Ekong took to social media to express his frustration with the ordeal while showing appreciation for his teammates’ resilience. Sharing photos of his arrival back in Nigeria, along with a traditional meal of fufu and egusi, the captain penned a heartfelt message:

“BACK HOME SAFE & SOUND. Proud of this team, NAIJA SPIRIT can’t be broken. Throw at us what you want, it’s in our blood to overcome.”

He reflected on the difficult experience, stating:
“In my 10 years with this team, I’ve seen a lot, but nothing like this. The situation brought us even closer together. After six hours at an abandoned airport with no food or water, we stayed positive and kept our spirit alive.”

Troost-Ekong emphasised the importance of respect in football:
“No team should be mistreated this way. Football is about respect, and that starts by respecting ourselves. Overcoming this challenge meant standing for what’s right, no matter the consequences.”

He ended his message with a focus on the future:
“Our goal to do the best for Nigerian football won’t ever change. We now look forward to continuing our journey to AFCON 2025 next month in the right way.”

CAF’s investigation into the Super Eagles’ treatment is expected to determine any sanctions or measures to prevent a recurrence. Meanwhile, the Nigerian team is shifting its focus to the next AFCON qualifier in November 2024, aiming to bounce back stronger.
