Super Eagles Send Encouraging Message to Injured Striker Taiwo Awoniyi
The Nigeria Super Eagles have sent a heartfelt message of support to Taiwo Awoniyi after the Nottingham Forest striker underwent emergency surgery following a serious abdominal injury.
The 27-year-old suffered the injury during Sunday’s Premier League match against Leicester City. He collided with the goalpost in the 88th minute while trying to connect with a cross from Anthony Elanga during the 2-2 draw at the City Ground.
Awoniyi, who had just come on as a substitute for Ibrahim Sangare, received treatment on the pitch and continued playing, but was clearly in pain.
Reacting to the news of his surgery, the official X (formerly Twitter) handle of the Super Eagles shared a graphic and message of encouragement to the striker. The post read:
“Brace up Tee Remember you’re stronger than you think “
The message has been widely praised by fans who appreciated the national team’s show of love and unity.
In an official statement, Nottingham Forest confirmed:
“The club can confirm Taiwo Awoniyi has undergone urgent surgery following an abdominal injury sustained during Sunday’s match against Leicester City.”
“Everyone at Nottingham Forest sends their best wishes to Taiwo. The club will provide further updates when appropriate.”
Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis also reacted to the situation, saying his decision to come onto the pitch at full time was partly due to frustration over how the injury was managed.
“Everyone – the coaching staff, players, fans, and myself – were upset about Taiwo’s injury and the medical team’s judgement on whether he should continue playing,” Marinakis posted on Instagram.
“It shows the passion we all feel for the club.”
Awoniyi, who joined Forest from Union Berlin in June 2022, was previously on the books of Liverpool from 2015 to 2021 but did not make a senior appearance.
This season, he has scored one Premier League goal for Forest and remains a key figure in Nigeria’s plans ahead of upcoming international matches.
