Super Eagles striker Sadiq Umar reacts to mob killing in Edo
Super Eagles striker Sadiq Umar has strongly condemned the killing of 16 Hausa travellers in Edo State, calling it a tragic result of ignorance and misinformation.
The Real Sociedad forward, currently on loan at Valencia, reacted after reports confirmed that the victims, who were travelling from Port Harcourt to Kano for the Sallah celebrations, were falsely accused of being kidnappers and lynched by a mob.
Taking to social media, Sadiq criticised the misunderstanding between Hausa and Fulani ethnic groups, which he believes fuels such attacks.
“Only the ignorant don’t know the difference between Hausa and Fulani,” Sadiq posted. “Hausa is a tribe from the North with both Muslims and Christians, and like every other tribe, there are good and bad people.
“It is the same with the Fulani, who have their own language (Fulatanchi) and are also made up of both Muslims and Christians. Ignorance is killing people. We have good and bad people in every tribe.”
Sadiq’s comments reflect the frustration of many Northerners, who feel unfairly stereotyped in Southern Nigeria due to rising tensions over herdsmen violence and kidnappings.
His reaction has sparked a wider discussion on ethnic profiling and the need for better understanding among Nigerians to prevent similar tragedies.
