FC Barcelona Femeni and Super Falcons star Asisat Oshoala was voted as the best striker in the world in an annual fan survey carried out by popular football outlet Goal, which was dominated by Barcelona Femeni players.
Asisat Oshoala finished in third place overall behind FC Barcelona Femeni teammates Alexia Putellas and Irene Paredes, both of whom are Spanish internationals.
Asisat Oshoala has endured a lean spell since becoming the captain of Nigeria’s Super Falcons, but has more than compensated with her performances for her club side in Spain.
Oshoala scored 18 goals in just 18 La Liga starts for Barcelona Femeni and added four more goals in their victorious UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign, including two in a crucial quarterfinal win over Manchester City Women. She played a crucial part as FC Barcelona Femeni strolled to a first-ever treble.
Asisat Oshoala is the most decorated African female footballer ever, and has won the CAF African Footballer of the Year award on four occasions, a record jointly-held with Super Falcons legend Perpetua Nkwocha.
Oshoala was named the IFFHS CAF Women’s Player of the Decade for 2011-2020 and also the BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year in 2015. An excellent goalscorer and serial winner, Oshoala has scored goals and won titles in every country she has played in professionally.
The 27-year-old had scored 12 goals in 12 appearances for FC Barcelona Femeni before picking up a knee injury in their 4-0 UWCL win against Hoffenheim. She was the leading scorer in the Spanish league with 11 goals in nine appearances. She currently has 72 goals for FC Barcelona Femeni in 93 appearances for the club since joining in 2019.
Asisat Oshoala was surprisingly excluded from the shortlist for the Ballon d’Or despite her impressive performances that saw her help her club win an unprecedented treble. She was, however, voted as the best striker in the world in the Goal survey that had over 10 million participants.
