Super Falcons Set for Big Tests Against Portugal and Ghana Before WAFCON

Nigeria’s Super Falcons will play two big friendly matches against Portugal and Ghana as part of their final preparation for the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

The Nigeria Football Federation earlier confirmed that the nine time African champions will face Portugal on 23 June.

Interim head coach Justine Madugu has also confirmed, according to ScoreNigeria, that the Falcons will take on West African rivals Ghana in a second warm up match. This game will be played in Morocco just before the tournament begins.

These matches are part of a well planned build up programme, which already included a 2-0 win against Cameroon earlier this month in Ogun State. The Super Falcons will have their training camp in Portugal before moving to Morocco for the competition.

Nigeria have been drawn in Group B and will face Tunisia, Algeria, and Botswana. Their first match is on 6 July against Tunisia at the famous Stade Mohamed V in Casablanca.

The Super Falcons last won the WAFCON title in 2018. They will aim to win a record extending 10th trophy this year, with a team that includes both experienced players and exciting young talents.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s Black Queens are preparing for the tournament in Benslimane, Morocco. They are in Group C with defending champions South Africa, Mali, and Tanzania.

With tough teams across the tournament, Nigeria’s friendlies against Portugal and Ghana are expected to help improve tactics and boost team spirit before the competition begins.

So far, only Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea (two titles), and South Africa (current champions) have ever lifted the WAFCON trophy.
