Super Falcons Star Rinsola Babajide Slams CAF Over Late WAFCON Postponement

Super Falcons forward Rinsola Babajide has criticised the Confederation of African Football after the sudden postponement of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The continental body recently confirmed that the tournament, which was earlier planned to take place from March 17 to April 3 in Morocco, has now been moved to July 25 to August 16, 2026. CAF explained that the change followed unexpected issues after discussions with world football authorities and other parties involved in the competition.

Babajide did not hide her disappointment over the decision. The former Liverpool attacker reacted on social media with a short but strong message that quickly attracted attention from fans.

“It’s actually embarrassing at this point,” she wrote.

The announcement came at a difficult time for many teams preparing for the competition. Nigeria’s Super Falcons had already stepped up their training programme ahead of the tournament.

The team had gathered in camp and played warm-up matches as part of their preparation. In one of the games, Nigeria defeated Cameroon 3–1, with Babajide scoring in the first half.

The Super Falcons, who remain the most successful team in the history of the competition with ten titles, were putting the final touches to their plans before the sudden change in schedule.

The late adjustment has also created fresh challenges for teams. Travel arrangements, player release agreements with clubs, and national team training camps had already been organised based on the original March dates.

Despite her frustration, Babajide suggested that the players must remain professional and stay focused as they adjust to the new timetable.

Her reaction has sparked debate among supporters, with many Nigerian fans also expressing concern over the handling of the competition and calling for better planning for major tournaments in African women’s football. ⚽
