SURRENDER!! Sao Tome withdraw from WAFCON qualifier vs Super Falcons of Nigeria

Sao Tome and Principe Women’s National team have reportedly surrendered and withdrawn from the WAFCON qualifier vs the Super Falcons of Nigeria.

Nigeria was scheduled to face Sao Tome and Principe in a 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifying first leg encounter on September 22 with the return leg on September 26, but that will no longer happen, SportsRation gathered per Pulse Sports.

According to the report, the Sao Tome and Principe Football Federation has written to CAF, notifying them of their decision to withdraw from the qualifiers.

Upon notification, the Nigeria Football Federation have also written to the clubs of invited Super Falcons players for the Morocco 2024 WAFCON qualifier, notifying them of the latest development.

Recall that Nigeria and Sao Tome and Principe recently locked horns in a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying game at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo.

In that game, Nigeria’s male National team, the Super Eagles spanked Sao Tome and Principe 6-0 to sum a 16-0 aggregate score in the AFCON qualification series.

Though no reason was stated for their decision to withdraw from the WAFCON qualifier, the thoughts of facing an overwhelmingly superior Super Falcons of Nigeria team may have played a part in their decision to surrender.

Following the withdrawal of Sao Tome, nine-time African champions Nigeria will play host to the winner of the first qualification round match between Liberia and Cape Verde in the next stage.

The second qualifying round will take place from November 27 to December 5, 2023.
