Thomas Tuchel set to become England’s new manager

Thomas Tuchel is reportedly on the verge of becoming the new head coach of the England national team, following Gareth Southgate’s resignation after Euro 2024. If confirmed, Tuchel will be the first non-English manager to lead the Three Lions since Fabio Capello in 2012.

The Football Association (FA) considered several high-profile candidates, including Pep Guardiola, Eddie Howe, and interim coach Lee Carsley, but ultimately opted for Tuchel due to his wealth of experience and success at the highest levels of football.

The former Chelsea boss has a deep understanding of English football from his time at Stamford Bridge and already has a working relationship with Harry Kane, whom he recently coached at Bayern Munich.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Tuchel’s appointment could be finalised and announced this week, with contracts in the final stages of preparation.

The decision to appoint the German tactician is seen as bold, given the historic football rivalry between England and Germany. However, Tuchel’s Champions League triumph with Chelsea, league titles at Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich, and his reputation for tactical innovation make him an appealing choice.

Despite his impressive CV, Tuchel will have big shoes to fill. Gareth Southgate’s tenure saw England reach a World Cup semi-final and two UEFA Euros finals, with the latest heartbreak coming in a narrow Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain.

Tuchel will be expected to build on Southgate’s legacy and finally deliver a major trophy for England. Interim boss Lee Carsley was considered, but the FA had doubts about his interest in a permanent role, prompting them to accelerate discussions with Tuchel.

Although Bayern Munich were reportedly keen to retain Tuchel for at least another year, the opportunity to lead England’s Three Lions proved too attractive for the German manager to resist.

With the managerial change imminent, Tuchel’s tenure will begin under immense pressure as he seeks to take England to new heights in international football.
