Triumphant Amusan arrives Lagos, set to lead Commonwealth athletes to Presidential Villa
Athletes to receive bumper package after Birmingham exploits
After an arduous and fulfilling season, superstar Tobi Amusan has finally landed in Lagos with pomp and pageantry. The 100mH world, Commonwealth, and Diamond League record holder will head out to Abuja for a grand reception on Thursday.
After breaking the world record at the World Athletics Championship in Oregon, Amusan broke the Commonwealth record in Birmingham and the Diamond League Meet record in Zurich. The 25-year-old star was in the form of her life as she showed time and again in the 2022 season that her successes were by no means flukes.
Amusan arrived Lagos via the Murtala Muhammed International Airport on Tuesday afternoon. She will lead Team Nigeria’s victorious athletes to a Presidential reception at the Aso Rock Villa on Thursday, where the Commonwealth victors are scheduled to be guests of President Muhammadu Buhari’s.
Nigeria’s Sports minister Sunday Dare will welcome the invited athletes to the Villa. The minister was immensely proud of the efforts of Nigeria’s representatives at the 2022 Commonwealth Games as they claimed 35 medals to finish in eighth place.
Speaking ahead of the Presidential reception, Dare said, “We are proud of you. We are also ready to give you all the support needed to make you soar higher and higher,” according to BSN Sports.
The Minister was grateful to God and the athletes for their historic performance in Birmingham while also appreciating President Muhammadu Buhari for accepting to host the latest heroes and heroines of Nigerian sports and for creating the enabling environment that ensured the realisation of the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
