Golovkin-Canelo talks progressing well, says Tom Loeffler

Gennady Golovkin’s trainer Tom Loeffler says “talks are progressing well” regarding a future fight with Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.

There has been plenty of clamour for 160lb king Golovkin and Alvarez – the WBO light-middleweight champion – to meet in 2017, a bout between the two having been talked up for some time.

Golovkin will make the latest defence of his middleweight belts against Danny Jacobs on March 18, but his trainer, Abel Sanchez, indicated Alvarez could well be the Kazakh’s next opponent.

“Tom [Loeffler, Golovkin’s promoter] tells me that they are progressing well with the negotiations,” Sanchez told World Boxing News.

“I really hope they are concluded as it’s a fight boxing needs. The fans need the best fights that can be made to happen.”

Golovkin stopped Kell Brook inside five rounds on his last outing and Sanchez does not expect Jacobs to go the distance at Madison Square Garden.

“I’m hoping Danny Jacobs is true to his word and comes to fight,” added Sanchez.

“I’m afraid it won’t be good for him though as nobody at 160 will last the distance with Golovkin. If they at least try to win, it could be better but I’m afraid he won’t see the end of this fight.”
