U-17 AFCON: Senegal spank Algeria to book last-8 spot

Senegal spanked 2023 U-17 AFCON hosts Algeria 3-0 to book a spot in the last-8 with one group stage game to spare.

Both teams got their tournament off to a winning start vs Somalia and Congo respectively.

In their second group A game, Senegal were excellent to secure maximum points vs Algeria on Tuesday May 2 at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Algiers.

Senegal took the lead right at the stroke of halftime through skipper Amara Diouf when he headed home from a Lassana Traore corner-kick.

A well deserved 1-0 halftime lead for the West Africans who had the best chances of the first 45-minutes.

Algeria emerged for the second half looking bright but that will suffer a setback when Senegal doubled their lead. Goalkeeper Mastias Hammache brought down a Senegal forward in the penalty area and Amara Diouf made no mistake with the resultant penalty.

Mamadou Sawane tapped in a cutback from his skipper Diouf for Senegal`s 3rd goal to seal a convincing 3-0 win.

Senegal becomes the first team to qualify for the quater-finals at the 2023 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations while Algeria will wait for their last group game vs Congo to determine their fate in the competition.
