U-20 WC: African Champions Senegal bow to Japan
Africa U-20 Champions Senegal bowed to a 1-0 loss in the hands of Japan in their opening game of the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
Youngster Kiryu Mitsurki struck the only goal of the match in the 15th minute to claim victory for the Japanese.
Senegal did dominate proceedings but could not find a way past Japan at the Estadio Ciudad de la Plata.
The young Lions had 12 shots on goal with just three on target on Sunday night. Mamadou Camara fired over the crossbar from a Souleymane Faye in the first half before Ibrahim Secki, Samba Diallo and Samba Diallo all had chances to score for Senegal.
Senegal will rue their missed chances vs Japan as they engage Colombia and Isreal in their remaining group C games.
Their next opponent is Israel on Thursday. 3rd/4th placed sides will be eyeing a win to get their FIFA U-20 World Cup campaign back on track.
