U-20 World Cup: Edozie, Oyegoke star as England defeat Tunisia in group E opener
Two players of Nigerian descent Sam Edozie and Daniel Oyegoke were named in the starting XI as England U-20 defeated Tunisia U-20 1-0 in the group E opener of the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Argentina.
The game on Monday May 22 was decided at the Diego Maradona Stadium in Buenos Aires.
Ian Forster named the Southampton winger and Brentford defender in his starting XI for the game against a team from the continent of their root.
England lads dominated the first half and opened the scoring in the 5th minute as Dane Scarlett headed a cros from Oyegoke just wide of the target.
In the 25th minute, Dane Scarlett bettered his first attempt as he headed home from Harvey Vale`s cross in the 25th minute. Edozie then set-up Alfred Devine but the goal bound attempt was blocked.
England led 1-0 at the half-time break.
Tunisia returned for the second half looking charged up from the start but could not find a way past Oyegoke and the English defence.
England soon recovered from a slow start to the second half and looked the more likeliest to score the next goal.
Daniel Oyegoke came close to doubling the lead for the Young Lions as the game wore out for a 1-0 winning start to the World Cup for European U-20 champions England.
England will take on Uruguay on Thursday May 25 in their next match before cending the group-stage vs Iraq on Sunday.
