U-20 World Cup: France stunned by resilient South Korea
France U-20 were left stunned by a resilient South Korea team who did just enough to secure a 1-2 win their opening group game of the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
The match was played at the Estadio Malvinas Argentinas in Mendoza on Monday May 22.
France dominated possession but that was not going to count in the end.
South Korea left France stunned when they took the lead in the 27th minute. Lee Seung-Won finished off a quick break with a right footed shot into the bottom left corner.
The goal sparked attacking incursions from the French lads but it was the underdogs who scored the next goal.
Lee Young-Jun headed a set-piece delivery from Lee Seung-Won to double South Korea`s lead in the 64th minute.
A frantic finale was set-up as Alan Virginius converted a 70th minute penalty. 1-2 and 20-minutes left to play, France did mount pressure for a winner but a combination of poor finishing and excellent defending ensured South Korea bagged all three points with a 2-1 win over their more illustrious opponents.
France will now turn attention to their next game vs Gambia while South Korea will face Honduras on Thursday May 25.
