U-20 World Cup: Italy knock England out in Round of 16
Italy knocked England out in the Round of 16 of the 2023 FIFA U-20 World cup in Argentina on Wednesday May 31, 2023.
A late penalty kick was awarded to the Italians and it decided the outcome of the game between two European powerhouses.
Video reviews were undertaken to prompt the spot kick after England defender Jarell Quansah handled the ball in his teams penalty area.
Chelsea FC player Cesare Casadei converted the 87th minute penalty to send Italy through to the quater-final at the expense of England.
Giuseppe Ambrosino did set-up Tommaso Baldanzi to score the opening goal of the game in the 8th minute.
England then fought back to equalize when a Dane Scarlett cross was volleyed into the goal by Alfie Devine in the 25th minute.
Both teams returned to the changing room at halftime with scores level at 1-1.
Italy who finished in second place in group D were the better side against group E winners Brazil. The Gli Azzurrinni pressed the young Lions in the second half.
Not even the inclusion of Chelsea first team player Carney Chukwuemeka could save England from a painful Round of 16 defeat .
Jarell Quansah was punished for a hand ball in his penalty area. Cesare Casedei scored the penalty to seal a 2-1 win for Italy over England.
