U-20 World Cup: Senegal hold Israel to keep knock-out qualification hopes alive
Senegal U-20 fought hard to hold Israel to a 1-1 draw in their second group stage match of the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
After suffering a 0-1 loss to Japan in their opening group game, Senegal needed a positive result vs Israel on Wednesday evening.
Both teams failed to convert any of the chances created in a goalless first half. Dor Turgeman and Tai Abed had their efforts saved while Senegal`s Mame Faye, Souleymane Faye and Samba Diallo all drew saves from the Israeli goalkeeper.
Israel were gifted the lead in the 58th minute when Babacar Ndiaye turned into his own goal.
That goal looked like the winner for the Isrealites until Pape Diop struck in the 80th minute.
Mamadou Gning delivered a cross which was headed into the bottom right corner by Pape Diop to level scores.
A frantic finale ensued as the Africa U-20 Champions pushed forward in search of a winner.
It was not to be as it ended Senegal 1-1 Israel.
A point to keep Senegal’s hope of qualifying for the last 16 of the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup alive and tied to their last group game vs Colombia on May 27, 2023.
