Uche Voices Frustration as AFCON 2025 Hopes Fade

Super Eagles forward Christantus Uche has opened up about his growing frustration as he faces the possibility of missing Nigeria’s squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The 22-year-old joined Crystal Palace on transfer deadline day after a bright spell at Getafe, where he scored once and provided an assist in three La Liga matches. His loan move includes a €20m obligation to buy if he makes a set number of starts. However, he has struggled to earn playing time under Palace manager Oliver Glasner.

So far this season, Uche has made only one start in nine appearances across all competitions, playing just 124 minutes. This lack of game time has weakened his chances of making Nigeria’s final 28-man squad, even though he is listed in the 55-man provisional team.

Uche, who made his Super Eagles debut in June, shared his feelings on Instagram, writing:

“It hurts when you go through something that kills you inside but you have to act like it doesn’t bother you at all. Keep believing. Faith in all things you do.”

Uncertain Future at Club Level

There is also confusion surrounding Uche’s long-term club future. Reports suggest both Getafe and Crystal Palace are unsure about the next steps.

Getafe president Ángel Torres recently spoke about the situation, saying:

“Uche? If he comes back, we’ll buy him back again and sell him next year.”

He added that things “don’t look good” for the young striker.

In England, it is believed that Palace no longer plan to activate the €20m clause, as Glasner does not see Uche as part of his main squad.

FIFA rules further complicate matters, as players cannot play for more than two clubs in one season. Having already featured for Getafe and Palace, Uche cannot join a third team until next summer. His only possible move in January, if allowed by contract, would be a return to Getafe.

Torres confirmed the club would accept him back, saying: “He’s welcome back.”

With AFCON approaching and his club situation uncertain, Uche will be hoping for clarity soon as he looks to revive his season and keep his international dreams alive.
