UECL RO16: Moffi scores, assists as Nice book quarterfinal spot

Super Eagles striker marks national team call-up with goal

Terem Moffi enjoyed a good performance for OGC Nice as they overcame Moldovan outfit FC Sheriff Tiraspol 3-1 to reach the quarterfinals of the UEFA Europa Conference League. The French side secured a 4-1 aggregate victory to enter Friday’s draw.

Coming into the game on the back of a goalscoring showing at the weekend, Moffi was tasked with leading the line for OGC Nice against Sheriff, who had Akanbi Rasheed on the pitch in attack. Nice had claimed a narrow 1-0 win in Moldova in the first leg of the tie.

The home side took the lead after 30 minutes when forward Gaetan Laborde fired home after he was set up by French midfielder Khephren Thuram.

Nice doubled their advantage in the 53rd minute through Moffi, who scored the first European goal of his career and his fourth goal since joining the club. He received the ball in the box with his back foot before selling a dummy to beat his marker and driving the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

Sheriff Tiraspol pulled one back within a minute through Burkinabe forward Abdoul Tapsoba’s finish, giving them hope in the tie.

Nice rounded off the scoring in the 79th minute through young Algerian striker Bilal Brahimi, who scored his first European goal for the club after being set up by Moffi.

Nice will now progress to the quarterfinals of the competition and will be in the draw on Friday.
